Web Hosting: Is Managed Hosting Right for Me?

When you're hunting around for good webhosting, you'll find that you have a huge number of options. Some of the choices are very simple, entailing virtual servers that are managed with wizards and other convenient interfaces. Other options will be incredibly complex, requiring you to handle the allocation of bandwidth, load balancing and other very technical aspects of web hosting. There are packages that fall somewhere in between, as well. These packages are usually called managed hosting and they combine the power of a dedicated server with the convenience that usually comes with simpler hosting packages.

One of the most compelling reasons to move toward a managed package is to offer your business the capacity of a dedicated web host. When your site is on a dedicated host, it means that all of the bandwidth and all of the machine's resources are used to power your site. You can also load multiple sites on these servers. Most websites use far less disc space than most people assume and there is plenty of room for more than one site, even where large sites are concerned, on these servers. This is a great way to offer your business room to expand its web presence.

The tradeoff with these packages is the technical expertise necessary to operate the servers. Dedicated servers are set up from scratch and you'll need to have the technical skills needed to configure one from there. If you don't have these skills, then managed web hosting may be the best option. With these packages, there is a tech on staff at the hosting company who is responsible for managing your server. This includes most everything, from changing software and attending to bandwidth concerns to replacing hardware components when they fail. For most businesses, this is a great arrangement.

No matter what option you choose, make sure that you plan ahead for growth. Bandwidth is the measure of how much data is downloaded from your server within a given timeframe. If you go over, you may be charged for it and these charges can become quite high if it's consistently a problem. With managed services, you can usually consult with the tech so that you can be prepared when your usage increases. They can sometimes help you to more efficiently use your resources so that you can save money on this, and other concerns, as well.

Web Hosting: The Best Place To Buy A Cheap Domain

you define "best" as "cheapest" then the cheapest prices for domain names on the web is bound to be the monster auction house, Ebay. You can sometimes find dot-infos there for a penny and dot-coms, nets and orgs for less than a dollar. The selection may be limited, the registration period remaining far less than a year, and your chances of finding the name you really need slight, but if price is the only determinate, by all means go to Ebay.

Buying a domain on Ebay will almost certainly require a Paypal account and most of the buying and selling on Ebay is done by domainers. Domainers being those folks who, like land developers buying undeveloped land, buy domains hoping to someday sell them at a considerable profit to people who want to put up websites on them. As you might imagine they are not selling their best domains at these fire-sale prices.

Price, of course is the principal reason to buy a domain on Ebay. But be careful. Many domainers try until the last minute to sell their domain to higher bidders at different auction houses that specialize in domains. The domain you buy for nearly nothing on Ebay might be worth exactly that because it is fated to expire within days of your purchase and you will find yourself having to come up with the price of another year's registration before you can get any use out of your new domain.

For non-domainers buying cheap domains on Ebay can be profitable, entertaining and educational. Keep in mind, however, that the people you are trading with are just as tight with a dollar as you are and most of them have probably been at it longer. So be careful.
